The Netflix original movie XOXO portrays “a great reflection of club culture”, according to a fifty eight year old critic who has never stepped foot inside a nightclub.
Writing for the Santa Barbara Enquirer, Rebecca Di Vista claimed that XOXO is the “ultimate guide” to the modern EDM scene.
However, according to twenty eight year old raver Michael Smith, Rebecca Di Vista is “full of shit” and the movie is nothing like any rave he has ever been to.
“I’ve been clubbing and going to festivals since I was about seventeen,” explained Mr Smith. “So I started long before the cotton candy EDM explosion happened here in the U.S.A. and I’m telling you now I ain’t never been to no rave that looked anything like that XOXO crap. That shit is totally pop culture, not club culture.”
“The whole thing is full of happy go lucky, tutu wearing, perfect teeth having supermodel look alikes,” continued Smith, who claims to have spent four years traveling in Europe, where he witnessed “real club culture”. “Where’s all the dodgy dealers, the guys with their eyes rolling in the back of their heads or the girls with puke all down the front of their shirts?”
“How can you show a modern reflection of club culture without all of these characters?” scoffed Smith. “There wasn’t even any guys walking around in slow motion with marshmallow legs, I’m sorry, it’s not club culture if there’s no ket heads”
“There’s nothing in this movie apart from wannabe VIP, party slut nonsense,” ranted Smith. “It’s just a white, middle classed interpretation of an underground subculture that they’ll never really understand.”
