D’ya Hear This? – The Wunderground Weekly Guide To The Best New Acts

D’ya Hear This? is Wunderground‘s weekly childish tantrum of a music column. Each week we’ll be showcasing new acts that we think deserve their names shouted from the rooftops. If you don’t listen to our recommendations you’ll make us really upset and we’re liable to stamp our feet and scream. So just listen to it and save the bother, and tears!

GAPS

Gaps-010

Gaps are a folk electronic (I’ll never embrace the term ‘folktonica’) two-piece who make are putting out some interesting cross genre electronic music built around typically haunting vocals and an acoustic guitar. Tracks like Inside Your Head, a slow burning tune with a plodding beat accompanied by filigree guitar work that builds towards an almost chanted climax, showcase what they’re about. Some tracks are more out and out folky than others but most of them follow a formula of starting off sparse and building layers of electronics on top as the track progresses towards quite a dancey finish. Well worth checking out!

You weren’t asking but this is my favourite track of theirs…enjoy!

John Wizards

John-Wizards-008

25 year old multi instrumentalist, John Withers, and vocalist, Emmanuel Nzaramba, make really – really – good sunny weather music. I don’t know if I could imagine myself listening to these guys in the winter? I first came across a mixtape of theirs a few months ago and have been playing the shit out of it every time the sun burst, or more accurately, – limped – through the clouds. For some reason the mixtape is no longer listed on soundcloud so I’ve included a track of theirs called Lusaka By Night to give you a taste. To describe their sound you’d have to throw every world music adjective you’ve ever heard into one sentence and I’m not that talented of a writer so just list them out in your head and select ‘all of the above’ from your brain menu. They’re sort of what Animal Collective would sound like on a Caribbean holiday. Oh and did I mention they’ve signed to Mike Paradinas’ Planet Mu imprint?? Sweet…

Escort

MontrealCrowdStage

Loving these guys at the moment! 17-piece American disco troupe Escort are the perfect musical accompaniment for the summer, delicious disco grooves to liven up the dancefloor. They remind me of so many people, hints of LCD, !!! and Hercules and Love Affair being the most obvious contemporary acts. Seriously, get these guys into ya!
