In a recent interview, Dutch DJ Tiësto, poured his heart out about an affliction that has dogged him since childhood – an inability to whistle.
The star, pictured above trying to whistle, claimed that not being able to whistle has caused him acute emotional trauma, “Ever since I was a kid it’s something that I’ve struggled with,” lamented Tiësto, “All the other kids used to point and laugh at me as I tried my hardest to whistle. Often through streaming tears. It was very traumatic.”
“It got worse as a teenager when I started going to clubs and gigs. Everyone would be whistling their praise and encouragement to the DJ but all I could manage was spluttering some spit filled air. Needless to say the girls didn’t find it attractive.”
“It was actually not being able to whistle that was part of the reason I took up DJing. I wanted to get away from the audience where everybody was whistling but still be able to enjoy the music so I became a DJ. The DJ never has to whistle and if I do need to, then there are whistle effects you can use,” explained Tiësto.
The DJ spoke candidly about how he sought to overcome his inability to whistle by removing himself from other situations that require whistling, “I’ve never trained a dog or refereed a football match. I can’t even whistle a cheerful tune when I’m happy. Sometimes I try to replace it by humming but it makes my throat scratchy.”
Tiësto, who is a founding member of the Non-Whistle Anonymous (NWA) support group, went on to explain that he has trouble with other minor motor skills like eating with chopsticks, tying shoelaces or using childproof cigarette lighters.
“I can’t click my fingers or wink. Sometimes I see the other DJs clicking their fingers to the beat or winking at girls in the audience and I feel like a freak. I tried to wink at a girl backstage before it didn’t work,” explained the DJ, close to tears. “She thought I had something stuck in my eye…she even offered to help get it out and…to save my embarrassment…I just pretended I did have something in my eye,” cried a distraught Tiësto before ending the interview.
