In a bid to seem like a professional DJ a young bedroom DJ has taken to providing his Mum with a detailed hospitality rider ahead of every practice set.
Thom Blake, a 19-year-old student from Wolverhampton, has been sending his Mum a detailed hospitality rider since getting decks last year.
“It’s standard practice in the DJing community to have the venue or promoter provide the DJ with a hospitality rider that includes some items to make the DJ’s stay more enjoyable like cocaine and champagne,” explained Thom. “My Mum owns my bedroom so it’s her responsibility to make sure I’m sorted out with obscure branded sweets and fresh towels.”
The rider, said to be two pages long, is emailed over to Thom’s Mum at the start of every week, during which he’s likely to play 6 or 7 two hour sets.
“Any DJ in the world putting in that much time and effort into playing at a venue would be within their rights to request a few things,” added Thom. “I heard that Todd Terje requests curling irons for his moustache while Steve Aoki requests people not to point and laugh at him.”
Thom’s Mum, Angela, says she is happy to fulfill her obligations as a promoter but that some of the items on the list are a little bit extravagant.
“Some of the things like clean socks and having the ironing done I don’t mind,” explained Angela. “But he’s got another thing coming if he thinks he’s getting a bottle of Cristal or a plate of strawberrys dipped in Dom Perignon flavoured ice cream and arranged into a giant pyramid like Ferrero Rocher.”
“He’s not a big enough DJ for that,” she added. “Maybe he can get a couple of bottles of Blue Nun and a Snickers if he’s lucky.”
