English jungle DJ Shy FX has revealed that he is “slightly nervous and a bit worried” about meeting new people during, what he has described as, his most hectic Spring schedule yet, which will see him play a number of high profile gigs including trips to Malta, for Annie Mac’s Lost & Found Festival, and Austria to play at Snowbombing.
Shy FX, real name Andre Williams, claimed that he suffers from crippling social anxiety when faced with large groups of people that he has never met before and believes that the time spent at these festivals will be challenging for him.
“Usually I wouldn’t go anywhere near a festival,” explained Shy FX during an interview with Wunderground that was conducted while sitting three rows apart in an empty church. “I don’t really go anywhere that you’d find large groups of people, especially if I think they’ll want to talk to me, but this spring is different, as soon as I seen the line ups for Lost & Found and Snowbombing I knew I had to go.”
“When I’m on the decks I’m totally fine,” claimed Shy FX, winner of 2015’s Best Name Award, “but as soon as my set is finished and people try to ask me questions and shake my hand I just freeze up, get all sweaty and nervous and start to say really stupid stuff, a bit like David Cameron when he’s approached by a member of the public.”
“I’m going to have to come up with some sort of plan that’ll mean I’ll be able to go to the festival but limit the number of new people I meet to the very minimum,” continued the Digital Soundboy label boss. “I was thinking maybe I’d dress up as Ainsley Harriott because nobody wants to talk to him, but I don’t think it’ll work because people might think I’m Lenny Henry and he’s well popular so I’ll have to think of something else.”
“People are always asking me ‘if you’re so shy why did you become a DJ and producer?’,” revealed Williams. “The truth is I don’t know, I suppose I never really expected to make it this big, although I never tell them that, usually when someone asks me a question I just run away and hide somewhere where I know there won’t be many people, like a charity fund raiser up north or a Judge Jules gig.”
