The current insolvency crisis gripping US city Detroit is a direct result of the decline of the city’s indigenous techno sound, according to Michigan state governer, Rick Snyder.
Speaking at a municipal press conference, Synder, claimed that there has been a steady slump in the number of producers emerging from Detroit over the years and as a result the scene has grown stagnant.
‘Detroit used to be a center for cutting edge techno with musicians like Derrick May, Robert Hood and Jeff Mills,’ claimed Snyder. ‘People used to come from everywhere to party in our warehouses but now that the focus of the techno scene has shifted to Berlin we’ve seen a massive drop in the number of people clubbing and the techno-dollars have dried up.’
Legendary techno producer and Detroit native, Juan Atkins, echoed Snyder’s analysis of Detroit techno, ‘It’s changed. Detroit isn’t the place it used to be. Walking down the street the other day I saw a kid in an Eminem t-shirt laughing and pissing on a Roland TR-909 while his friends watched and chanted. I cried myself to sleep that night,’ remarked the noticeably shaken producer.
