It has been revealed today that online music seller Beatport is to revamp its genre classification system and stop mistakenly classifying cheesy, commercial EDM as progressive house.
For the last few years, since the explosion of EDM in the United States in the form of pop electro-house, Beatport has been erroneously classing that music as progressive house when in fact it has no bearings on the original progressive house sound championed by heroes like Nick Warren, John Digweed and Sasha.
“After receiving countless complaints regarding how EDM electro-house tracks have been classed as progressive, we’ve finally decided to do the right thing and make it clear that big room mainstream EDM is not the same as ‘proper’ prog house,” revealed a Beatport spokesperson who also hinted that Beatport would be creating a new genre classification to place “bland cheesy EDM”.
“We’re probably going to call the new genre cheese-step, or shithouse,” he added.
“It’s about time they’re changing it back and addressing this issue, for too long this commercial stuff has been getting classed as progressive house when it plainly isn’t,” claimed one angry producer who says that the misnaming of the genre has effectively killed it as a legitimate artistic expression. “It’s giving progressive house a bad name, the only thing more damaging to the genre would be if you found out it was Joe Fritzl’s favourite music or that, despite hating all Western cultural artifices, ISIS were actually quite into progressive house.”
“It’s a shame its taken this long for them to sort it out, a whole generation of new music fans have grown up thinking that the stuff played by the Swedish House Mafia was in the same bracket as some of the proggy classics on Nick Warren’s Global Underground: Amsterdam,” he continued. “That’s like giving comparing a fine Italian wine with some Blue Nun that’s just been spat up by a fat van driver.”

Finally!!! About time…
Maybe call it EDAM, Electronically Dire American Music
