Renowned DJ and producer Jamie xx has opened up about how people constantly think he’s coming on to them when he signs off emails and texts.
“It’s been happening basically every time I communicate electronically,” confided Jamie, real name Smith of popular London band The xx. “At first it was just a funny quirk and I got a laugh out of the delightful misunderstandings but it’s been happening 7 years now, it needs to stop.”
“It’s tough to manage,” continued Jamie xx who says the issue occurs because people think he’s signing off with kisses every time. “Any text or email exchange just gets progressively more flirty because they all think I’m trying to be coquettish and flirty, but it’s just my name.”
Jamie claims that he has tried numerous times to just communicate with people as Jamie Smith but that “the name is so common that they don’t know that it’s me from the xx and think it’s some random 6th former sending them remixes”.
“I also tried to change it to Jamie xx Smith but they thought I was weirdly declaring love for some man, or perhaps dog, called Smith,” he added. “Or they’d just still think that I was coming onto them.”
“But if I really was coming onto them it’d be Jamie xx followed by an xx, the fact that it’s two small x’s as well leaves no room for misinterpretation,” he continued. “One x, sure that could be viewed as just a familiar peck between friends but two says more, they could probably think ‘maybe he just meant to do one but pressed too hard and did two’.”
“But if then I go and sign my name again at the end of the text, Jamie xx, then they’re thinking another two xx’s, this guy is way into me,” he continued. “I’m just glad we didn’t name the band The XXX or Love You.”
Friends of Jamie’s say that because of everyone he communicates with thinking he’s trying to get into their pants, he has been shot down by some of the beautiful people he’s worked with including Adele, Eliza Doolittle and Four Tet.
“It knocks your confidence, why do you think my music is so melancholic?” he added. “I think I’ll just go back to my surname and use the initial for that, Jamie SS…I can’t see how that would cause any issues.”
