There was collective confusion among Deadmau5 fans after the producer announced the release of a techno track for Richie Hawtin’s prestigious Minus label.
The track, to be released under Deadmau5’s Testpilot alias on Hawtin’s Plus8 imprint, displays a more muscular, techno sound than Deadmau5 is known for which seems to have angered some fans.
“Where’s the drop?,” asked one exasperated fan, Jason Harte. “Answer me that, where’s the drop? You can’t, because there isn’t one. How is this supposed to be EDM if there’s no drop?”
“This isn’t fucking EDM,” he added, “it’s some kind of artsy, urban, gay crap and I won’t be buying it or listening to Mau5 anymore. I feel betrayed.”
“It’s a shit song that just doesn’t go anywhere, it’s boring, I can’t roll on molly to that,” angrily continued another fan who says he now plans to have his Mau5 head tattoo removed and also to unfollow the popular producer on Twitter.
Most of the fans interviewed claimed that they were bored by the track and moaned that it doesn’t fit in with their conception of what EDM sounds like. “I just don’t know how to dance to that without there being a drop to indicate exactly when it’s okay to dance?” asked another fan, Mike. “Maybe he’s trying to break the whole build/drop paradigm but I can’t see why, if it’s not broken then don’t fix it.”
“Whatever he’s trying to do I think he’s probably trying to be a bit too clever and the end result just sounds gay and European,” added Mike.
“I think it just feels kind of dark and scary and I can’t understand why he’d make it like that or if people even like this kind of music,” exclaimed Mau5 fan Samantha. “I read somewhere that it’s supposed to be this whole other thing called ‘techno’, but frankly I don’t know any self respecting EDM fan who’s even heard of techno, never mind listened to it.”
“It’s a slap in the face if I’m honest and I really can’t see this ‘techno’ or whatever you call it, catching on,” concluded Jason. “Plus, I don’t know who this Richie Hawtin guy thinks he is, or what he’s ever done for the EDM scene, but thanks a lot for breaking Mau5 and destroying EDM buddy.”
