A young man at a rave who managed to time his fist pump for the exact moment when the beat dropped is reportedly thinking that everyone who saw it must think he’s brilliant.
“Most of the time I dance for myself, but if I have the chance to show off my knowledge of a song and thus my innate understanding of dance music by fist pumping at the exact moment the beat drops, then I’ll do it,” gurned Matt Harris, who claims that doing piano fingers is also a big hit with his fellow clubbers. “Other people see me doing a bit of piano fingers and then bang, the drop comes in and I’ve caught it on the nose and they’re definitely thinking ‘wow, this guy really knows his stuff and is a top raver.'”
The practice of fist pumping at the exact moment of the drop is carried out by people “off their chomp” in clubs all over the world and is colloquially called “catching the drop, beat pumping and dancing”.
“In that moment you don’t need to know what white label is playing or to quote Cajmere’s early career off Discogs to assert how ‘techno’ you are, you just have to pump your fist at the right moment,” he added.
Witnesses claim they barely even noticed that Matt managed to time the fist pump to the drop citing the fact that they “were all thinking exactly the same thing”.
“Oh Matt timed his pump to the beat? So did I. But, like, I don’t even know the track, I just have a natural understanding of rhythm,” claimed James, who describes himself as a party friend of Matt’s, insisting they don’t hang out in real life but will share drugs at parties. “Any time I’ve tried to fist pump for the drop I’ve never, ever come in a bar too early and looked like an unrhythmic stooge…never.”
“And if I did ever miss the drop, or come in too early, then I’d just disguise the pump as an expectant hand gesture – like piano fingers or that closed eyes wrist twirl that people do, as if they’re beckoning the drop on,” he continued. “Or else I’ll just pretend I was scratching my ear.”
Scientists have claimed that people under the influence of ecstasy tend to go into their own little worlds – to use the scientific term – in which they think that fist pumping to the beat or dancing extra hard at the songs banging climax is actually observed and judged by those around them.
When in actual fact they’re all too busy thinking of a similar variation of how brilliant at dancing, or in the zone, they are to notice what the fuck other people are doing around them.
“When the beat drops most people will try to hit that exact moment to fist pump, it’s a device used in dance tracks to let people know they’re having a good time and when to dance hard,” claimed fist pump expert Eoin Smith. “In a club setting it works great but unfortunately in the EDM scene they focus only on the drop to the detriment of an interesting groove and melody.”
