American EDM star Wolfgang Gartner has today decided to change his stage name to Adolf Hitler in a bid to sound more German.
Wolfgang, real name Joseph Thomas Youngman, has been trying to land on a name that sounds German enough to make audiences think he’s a proper and believes he’s finally cracked it with Hitler.
“I came up with the name Wolfgang Gartner when I was just starting out, I’d been using my real name but nobody gave me any respect so I came upon the idea of sounding more German to get credibility.”
“It’s the same technique used by Maceo Plex, although he likes to back it up with actual talent.”
“Once I changed my name to Wolfgang people started to notice me,” he added. “The more German-sounding your name is, the bigger a DJ you’ll be.”
Wolfgang claims that, despite having a German enough sounding name, he needed to up the stakes if he wants to secure European bookings.
“What’s more German than Adolf Hitler? You can’t see that name and not think of implacable German electronica.”
Wolfgang, who will officially be known Hitler on his latest promotional material, toyed with some other German-sounding names before settling on Hitler.
“I went through all the famous German names like Himmler, Goering and Becker but none of them were German enough,” he added. “Now, whenever anyone sees my name on a lineup or hears one of my tracks they’ll think ‘yep, he’s German and therefore good at dance music’ instead of ‘Wolfgang Gartner, who’s he?’”.
“And in case they don’t get that I’m German and credible I’ll introduce into my act some aspects of Hitler’s personality – like unintelligible shouting, elaborate hand gestures and Jew-hating.”
