Paris Hilton has today fired shots at Derrick Carter after the Chicago house legend went on a twenty four hour rant about the current state of the electronic music scene via a number of tongue in cheek tweets and Facebook status updates.
Carter jokingly labeled a number of stereotypical characters in today’s industry as “Derp House”, attacking DJ’s logos, fashion, image and any other instance where style is perceived as being more important than substance.
Hilton, who has been pressing play on CDJs since 2012, claims she “doesn’t even know who Derrick Carter is” and insisted that “being a DJ and producer for over thirty years doesn’t give him the right to diss totally hot and younger DJs”.
“I was like what’s a Derrick Carter and why is he so against Derp House,” asked the heiress. “I mean, he can’t be that big in the industry if someone with my pedigree isn’t aware of him, it is a him right?”
“What is that guy’s problem with Derp House?” asked Hilton in words muffled by a polished silver spoon she keeps in her mouth. “Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s bad and you get to hate on it. I don’t understand the times tables or where babies come from but I don’t go around calling them stupid on the internet every day.”
“I think he’s just jealous because he’s not involved in the Derp House revolution,” continued Hilton, whose DJ mixes have been critically acclaimed by people she pays to respond positively to everything she asks them. “If he wants to get left behind and look like he doesn’t pay somebody 80k a year to tell him what to wear then that’s his problem but he doesn’t have to bring the rest of us down with him.”
“Hasn’t he ever heard of PLUR?” enquired Hilton. “That, along with money, are the two most important things in the music industry. Who cares what type of music you play as long as everyone in the crowd has some molly and you get paid lots of money. Are we not all after the same thing here?”
“You can play house, tech house, electro house or derp house,” continued Paris. “It doesn’t matter to me at all because I live in a mansion, and I think I’m speaking for most of the other important people in the industry when I say that.”
Carter has yet to respond to Hilton’s comments although it is believed he’s sitting happily content in his Chicago house after having his rant vindicated by the self involved ramblings of one of Derp House’s leading lights.

Thanx guy’s!!! You did REALLY good. Appreciate it!
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the reason she gets paid so much to DJ is probably less about her “talent” (haha) and more about her promotional draw. She has a two fronted attack in that department: 1) She’s famous, 2) She has a lot of rich friends who will come party with her and spend high table minimums. So you can bitch and moan about the state of EDM all you want — you can even hate her as a person, but at the end of the day….she’s doing her job as a DJ by making the venue that books her a lot of money. And we all know that if a monkey standing on stage juicing vegetables is what made money, they’d book that monkey for a residency.
This made me laugh, thanks 🙂
“if a monkey standing on stage juicing vegetables is what made money, they’d book that monkey for a residency.”
Class.
You’re a fucking idiot, DJ job is to DJ , not book or promote the club…
If you actually believe that, then the concept of promotional draw and the business of nightlife are clearly over your head. The job of a restaurant DJ is to DJ, the job of a headlining venue DJ is to actually have a brand with promotional draw behind them.
It’s unfortunate that the world has come to this, but in an ideal world it wouldn’t be this way. A really great club or venue should be known for the quality acts that it books and the vibe it nurtures. Instead venues seem to be less focused on the long term goal of developing into a great venue and are instead shortsightedly focusing on profit. It’s hard to start a club or restaurant though and takes a lot of money, and once those doors open for business, investors will want their money back as soon as possible. I’ve seen too many club owners start out with grandiose ideas to be the greatest club in town, but when the profit doesn’t immediately start pouring in to validate their dreams, they result to desperate measures instead of sticking to their guns and their original plan. Instead they wind up caring about how to they get the maximum paying bodies through the door even if that means pandering to whatever is hot at the moment even if its a monkey on stage named “DJ” Paris Hilton, etc.
This is when the club has essentially lost its soul as it becomes entirely dependent upon the popularity of the next DJ to make them profit rather than their own reputation as a club. Their reputation in the meantime goes to the gutter as they now are known for putting any old hack artist on stage that will sell drinks. Some clubs can keep this up for a long time especially if they are in a big city. Although, most clubs can’t keep this up forever because DJs can demand more money to play at a venue known for crap. DJs know the venue has no bargaining power whatsoever, and no DJ wants to play at a shit venue anyway. This is when the venue resorts to last ditch efforts like raising the cover charge and the prices of drinks to save face and help offset the dwindling profits. In doing this, they only push their patrons further away even if a monkey is DJing inside. Eventually they can’t pay for brand name entertainment because no one will patronize the establishment and they wind up booking shit DJs who can’t even pull a crowd either. The venue ultimately loses, and closes it’s doors.
On the other hand, I know on any given night if I go to Cielo, Pacha, or Output in NYC I’m probably going to hear some amazing music being played whether I know who the DJ is or not. This is because the venues have stayed trued to their original beliefs and have become known (over time) for their consistency in providing a quality experience to those who come through their doors. For the venue, they have built something to take pride in. Even though building a reputation and relationship with the locals takes time, it is well worth it. Because once they earn the trust of their loyal fans, they can (and they MUST) be picky about who plays at their venue to uphold their reputation. The promoter doesn’t have to worry about booking whatever is “hawt.” When a venue is so well-renowned some big time DJs would almost play for free.
When that trust exists, the consistent income to the venue from loyal locals and curious tourists who heard about the club allows the venue to take risks with new artists and sounds. Venues can help their followers discover new artists they didn’t know about. The promoter can book a young DJ that doesn’t have a following but has good music and skills and that young artist can compete against hack artists in the grander scheme. Budding DJs don’t have to worry about impressing the club with their (bought) social media following to get in the door. The just have to focus on being great DJs and entertaining those who came for an experience.
Not everyone can stay true to themselves when the going gets tough. Not everyone wins, but at least one’s dignity stays intact when they lose. If it does work out, the reward is well worth the pain they endured. Too bad more people don’t stay true to themselves.
Excellent reply, and I agree with you, though it’s worth noting that Paris Hilton actually has (or had?) a residency at Pacha. Any major club follows that same business model. The EDC claims they are moving away from it, will be interesting to see how that pans out as a festival with it’s own draw may have the best shot.
Excellent reply, and I agree with you, but it’s worth noting that Paris Hilton’s high paying residency actually is (or was?) at Pacha. That’s just the way of the world for any high budget nightclub, or anything within the big $$ side of the entertainment industry. No one would ever dream of pumping a ton of money into a big budget music festival with a bunch of no name bands, or producing a high budget theatrical film with actors that no one has heard of. They’d lose their asses. And then some. In a perfect world, only the best artists would have promotional draw, but we all know that isn’t the case. If you’re a DJ, successfully marketing yourself is at least 70% of your battle.
Every person needs to market themselves whether its a DJ, painter or computer scientist if they want to make a decent living. We live in a crowded world. You can wait to be chosen based on your merit or you can make yourself known by going out there pounding the pavement. It’s just unfortunate when those rewarded were just better marketers than higher skilled people who can somewhat sell themselves.
Damn, Pacha has always been on the cheezy side, but this can only mean one thing. Pacha will be going outta business soon. 😉
lol… love this
reminds me of the untalented kid avicci vs the legend john askew.
Why oh why does anyone give a flying shit about Paris Hilton getting paid loads to DJ?
Paris -a lot of people would pay you lots of money to just shut up.
DERP HOUSE? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
