Up And Coming EDM Star Claims Unmixed DJ Sets Are “The Next Big Thing In EDM”

Mixing and beatmatching may be a thing of the past according to up and coming US EDM star, DJ Fake, who has made the outlandish claim that his style of DJing, which doesn’t involve any mixing together of tracks, is set to revolutionise DJing.

“Yeah mixing was great while it lasted and it’s a commendable skill to be able to take people on a musical journey over the course of a night,” explained Fake, “but the days of playing dance music in that way are dead, it’s like singing live when you could lip synch flawlessly, pointless. Mixing just isn’t the most important part of a DJ’s repertoire anymore and it’s about time the EDM community accepted that.”

“Mixing is a thing of the past, anyone who’s been to a Steve Aoki show knows that it’s not the most important part of the show,” continued Fake. “I’m just following that idea to its logical conclusion and people seem to be responding.”

DJ Fake has been quick to defend his style of DJing claiming that “when you mix a track you’re missing out on the start and the end of a lot of tracks, but with an unmixed set you can hear those often monotonous outros. By mixing over those parts you’re essentially ruining the opportunity for people to listen to a piece of music that was in no way designed to be just mixed over.”

In response to claims that this so-called DJing “is just a dude pressing play and could be done by anybody,” DJ Fake replied “this is a whole new form of mixing that totally still counts as mixing even though I’m not actually mixing.”

DJ Fake explained how his style of DJing works, “Basically it’s exactly as it sounds, I play a track and then do nothing to it until I see the timer flash and then just when it ends I press play on the next track. It takes a whole lot of skill to press play at the exact moment when the track ends, you’ve got to be on your toes.”

“But the plus side is that while the track is playing I’ve got a lot more time to gesture to the crowd, clap or mingle with my entourage of posing glad-handers, you know the real stuff that people came to see. If you’re the kind of DJ who is behind the decks, head down, getting on with showing the people a great time then you’re a dinosaur in this game and not doing what the highest paid DJs do.”

“You’ve got more time for people to applaud between tracks, you can talk on the mike and make little quips about the first time you played a track etc,” he concluded. “Make it more of a performance because at the moment, in the current structure, it’s just a guy playing tracks skillfully and seamlessly. Where’s the performance in that?”
