Tomorrowland this morning made the massive announcement that record breaking English pop act One Direction are among the first group of acts scheduled to play at the Belgian EDM/pop festival.
“One Direction are one of the biggest pop acts in the world with a massive following among young people,” read the official statement from Tomorrowland, “So when we knew that they were available and interested in making their Tomorrowland debut, we did everything we could to book them for what is shaping up to be the biggest and best Tomorrowland to date.”
“The English 5 piece are the perfect fit to bring their high energy upbeat pop stylings to the main stage on the Saturday night of both weekends in the biggest booking coup in the concert’s history,” continued the statement. “With them being the most recognisable pop act on the planet they’ll be a massive draw to the demographic of music fans that Tomorrowland attracts.”
The band are set to take the stage with some of the biggest names in pop music like Calvin Harris, Hardwell and David Guetta on the weekend of the 24th – 26th of July in Boom, Belgium.
The booking of One Direction will be seen as something of a strange one to many, but when you consider that the festival has extended itself to cover two weekends this year there is the need to make sure that the ticket prices for both weekends provide value and an act as well known as One Direction will be sure to sell tickets.
One Direction’s Harry Styles spoke briefly about the news, “We’re always delighted to play festivals, especially ones as big Tomorrowland. A lot of festivals were interested in booking us this summer like T4 On The Beach and Electric Daisy Carnival, but when Tomorrowland approached us it made sense to play there because, since it made the shift from dance music to EDM, it’s become the most pop friendly festival on the circuit and the perfect place for our sound.”
“When I set out to become famous by whatever means necessary I always wanted to be a pop star like Paris Hilton or in a pop band like the Swedish House Mafia,” continued Harry. “With One Direction sharing the billing with pop heroes like Afrojack and Steve Aoki, it’s definitely going to be one of the biggest events in EDM history and we couldn’t be more excited.”
