The BBC have announced that retired radio broadcaster, DJ and world famous wig wearer Sir Terry Wogan is set to take over the decks for one last time on this weekend’s Essential Mix.
Wogan enjoyed an illustrious career at the BBC, presenting Radio 2’s Wake up to Wogan breakfast show for a staggering fifteen years. The show had eight million regular listeners making Sir Terry the most listened to radio broadcaster in Europe.
“We’re delighted to have Sir Terry dust off his headphones and come back into the studio one last time,” commented Essential Mix host Pete Tong. “Since he retired from the BBC in 2009 he’s been a regular on the London clubbing scene, playing headlining slots in all of the biggest clubs including Fabric, Ministry of Sound and Egg, so it’s a real pleasure to have someone of such pedigree come in and play for us.”
Wogan, who gave up being Irish in the late 1960’s to concentrate on a career in broadcasting, spoke to Wunderground earlier and gave a little insight as to what we can expect from his mix, “I’ve wanted to do an Essential Mix mix for years and now that I’m retired and old it works perfectly because it’s on at four a.m. and I’m usually already up pissing at that time.”
“I’ve been playing a lot of grime, garage and drum and bass lately, it seems to really represent me and my character and, as this is probably going to be my last ever performance as a DJ, I really want it to encompass me as well as sounding great.”
“One thing that will be exclusive to my mix is that I’ll be performing the channel stings live myself,” explained Wogan, “so when you hear that bit that goes “Essential Essential Esssss-eeeeenn-tialllll” during the mix that’ll be me saying it,” continued Wogan in a West Brit drawl so silky it could seduce or nun or even popular day time TV lesbian Ellen DeGeneres.
Despite being seventy six years old Wogan is still very much relevant and as popular as ever with Britain’s youth, “I’ll definitely be tuning in to Tezza’s Essential Mix tonight,” claimed Natalie (23) from Southampton. “I’ve wanted to have sex with his voice since I was about three years old.”
“Even though he’s old and wrinkly, a bit like a Pepperami that’s been opened and left out of the fridge for a couple of weeks, you can still tell he’s well fit,” continued an excitable Natalie. “I know it’s a bit of a cliche but he’s like a fine wine, he definitely gets better with age.”
“I just wish he’d be more like a fine wine by getting me drunk and giving me a pounding…………head.”
You can catch Wogan’s essential mix exclusively live on BBC Radio 1 between four and six a.m. tomorrow morning.
