It has been a constant and colossal bone of contention in the world of EDM. Both sides of the divide are as passionate and as irate as each other. Vinyl versus Digital. As if there weren’t enough wars in the world…
A leading group of dance music experts, former DJs and vinyl purists have come together to propose the term MP3J to denotes those DJs that play using software instead of vinyl. It has caused a flurry of responses from both sides of the divide.
“I just call them cock-jockeys,” said one vinyl DJ, who wishes to remain anonymous. “They press play, that’s all. Then they just throw shapes until the song is finished.” His words were quickly backed up by other musical snobs who were busy readying gramophones for their sets that night.
On the other side of the divide are those that are happy to use laptops and advanced technology to play their music. DJ Bassfuck, from the Atlantic Southeast in the United States, had this to say.
“Fuck them, they’re like my parents, going on about how Elvis is the king and how you can’t get better than rickets. They’re stuck in the past. They’re even hand writing their letters of complaint because they won’t use email. I even saw one guy sending smoke signals. However, now that I think about it… He may just have been smoking crack, rhythmically.”
Only one man sat on the fence, and that man was DJ Evan Hand. “Listen,” he said, “If people can use loops, and manage to create something more by using those loops, let them at it. People thought electric guitars and CDJs were witchcraft when they first turned up.”
He continued, “There’s always a resistance in culture to new things. But then there’s always a charm and skill associated with the old things too. Just do what you like, and stop getting on other people’s cases. There are real problems out there. Like David Guetta and Calvin Harris. Can we not all just unify around how truly shit their music is?”
