A study carried out by the UCLA Sociology Department has revealed that there will be an estimated four hundred thousand failed DJs living in Los Angeles by the year 2016.
Professor Chad Murray spoke about the study’s findings, “California has always been a place where people come to try and realise their dreams.”
“It happened after the War of Independence, during the gold rush and after the Great Depression. More recently we’ve seen an influx of actors and now we’re experiencing something similar with DJs. The constant flow of outsiders coming to L.A. has helped keep the city’s economy and social structure steady for centuries,” he continued.
“People are always looking for easy ways to become famous and make a fortune. So naturally when they see people with minimal talent having major success, like we’ve seen with the rise of EDM, they want to be a part of it,” explained the professor.
“You can’t go out in this town nowadays without bumping into the next Skrillex from Nebraska or Idaho’s answer to Calvin Harris. Some of these guys may enjoy some limited success but the majority of them will end up living on the poverty line until they accept that it’s a pathetic dream and get a real job,” he said observationally.
“In L.A., where we have so much opulence, it is important to have people who are willing to do menial jobs while they chase their dreams. There is such a big demand in the service industry that without failed actors, and now DJs, there simply would not be enough waiters to keep the city’s many restaurants running. So on an economic level it’s great for the city,” said the smiling professor.
“It also helps keep crime levels down. Since the middle of the twentieth century, when all the wannabe actors started to arrive in L.A., the number of male on male rapes in the city completely bottomed out. It’s no secret that this was caused by the number of failed actors willing to give head to rich movie producers in public toilets for money. With the DJing industry being dominated by men this is a statistic that is unlikely to change,” he concluded.
