The BBC has confirmed today that it has commissioned a new television series entitled Wax in the Attic, to be hosted by dance music giants Goldie and Steve Lawler and broadcast on BBC 2.
The show will loosely be based on the format of current long-running BBC programme Cash in the Attic, and will feature Goldie and Lawler visiting the homes of old and retired DJs to search their record collections for rare and exciting vinyl.
“We’ve been watching the recent upsurge of young people shunning digital media in favour of vinyl with great interest, and decided that the time was ripe to make a programme that these people would enjoy,” BBC Director-General Michael Parsons told us.
“We approached Goldie and Lawler with the idea sometime before Christmas, and they were both really enthusiastic,” Parsons continued. “It’s set to be a big hit. Who doesn’t want to see Goldie get all excited about finding the test press of ‘Atlantis’ in LTJ Bukem’s spare room? Or Steve Lawler spontaneously combusting with joy after finding a box of old disco records in Carl Cox’s garage?”
Although participants on the show are still to be confirmed, we understand that Jumping Jack Frost, Kode 9, and Levon Vincent have all been approached with a view to appearing. The BBC are hoping to produce an initial 6 episode series, with more to follow if the show is a success.
However, the reaction from some DJs has been far from warm. When asked what he thought about the show, David Guetta replied that “he just doesn’t see the point of it.”
“No-one likes vinyl anymore,” he continued. “Perhaps they would if records came with built-in BPM counters or sync buttons. But they don’t. And despite the amount of exercise they get in the form of childish and extravagant fist-pumping, my arms struggle to lift an empty record box never mind a full one. Wax in the Attic will flop, just like my credibility.”
Others seemed to agree, with Tiesto stating that the show would “be more boring than the breakdown in my Adagio for Strings,” while Skrillex asked simply: “What’s a vinyl?” Despite this, we expect filming to begin immediately, with the programme expected to be aired sometime in the summer.
