In a last bid to ostracise the entire clubbing community, Berlin techno institution Berghain is set to change it’s name to “Don’t Even Bother Trying or DEBT”.
According to Berghain hierarchy, they feel the club has become too mainstream in recent months and the change of name and tightening of their door policy will help to reinstate its unbridled underground image.
Wunderground spoke to Berghain’s creative director Andy Mann earlier, “Berghain is becoming way too popular. Even though it’s still incredibly difficult to get into, lots of people still try and there’s always this big long queue outside. It’s like having a big sign up out there saying ‘we’re the coolest club in the world’ but that’s not what we want at all.”
“The queue totally gives people the impression that they have a chance of getting in, which nine times out of ten is not the case at all,” continued Mann. “We want people to know that we’re the coolest club in the world and to think there’s no way they’re cool enough to get in and we’ve decided that a name change and a bit of rebranding is the best way to achieve that.”
“The name ‘Don’t Even Bother Trying’ is absolutely perfect,” claimed Mr Mann enthusiastically. “It’s kind of intimidating and plays on people’s fear of rejection, and those who do manage to get in will get a large stamp on their hand that says ‘DEBT’ which will remind them that they will be forever in our debt for letting them into the coolest nightclub on the planet.”
Wunderground sources have confirmed that changes to the Berghain door policy will see people turned away if they blink, smile, aren’t wearing a long line t-shirts and in possession of at least one leather accessory, while people in gimp masks will receive preferential treatment.
